There are no elephants and gaudy sculptures to be found in Francesca Zambello’s staging of Giuseppe Verdi’s epic Aida, which recently kicked off the 2012 season at Glimmerglass Opera. However, one aspect of the opera that does get a dose of opulence is the costume design. New York fashion designer Bibhu Mohapatra was tapped to create the couture for the production. “Designing for opera was an amazing experience. I have always loved Aida; when Francesca Zambello invited me to design the costumes for this production, I was ecstatic. Aida is perfectly balanced; it has love, passion, sorrow, joy, courage, honor, power, celebration and mourning. The story is a great landscape for designing costumes. It’s like Aida in modern haute-couture.”

Bibhu Mohapatra-designed costumes for Aida

Fresh off presenting his Talitha Getty-inspired resort collection, designer Bibhu Mohapatra will soon see the fruits of another hard labor when the opera Aida premieres at the Glimmerglass Opera.
