Season in Detail
Cavalleria Rusticana
by Pietro Mascagni
November 7 & 9, 2025
A classic example of Italian ‘verismo’, Cavalleria Rusticana explores life and tragedy in a 19th century Italian village. For decades it was the inseparable companion of Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci, our sellout hit at the Lobero last November. In 90 action-packed minutes, our Cavalleria delivers the luscious music and compelling human drama that we love about Italian opera, in a beautiful new production inspired by the Sicilian countryside.

Caesar and Cleopatra
by George Frederic Handel
February 27 and March 1, 2026
By popular demand we return to the opulent world of baroque opera with a two-hour adaptation of Handel’s 4-plus-hour blockbuster Giulio Cesare. Based on on historical events that took place after the Roman Civil War and the conquest of Egypt, the opera puts one of antiquity’s most famous power couples front and center. The sequence of arias and duets in our new adaptation could be dubbed ‘Handel’s Greatest Hits.’

COLIN RAMSEY, the star of our recent The Marriage of Figaro is Julius Caesar. Soprano ANASTASIA MALLIARAS makes her company debut as Cleopatra. JOSH SHAW of Pacific Opera Project stages his first drama at OSB, and EMILY SENTURIA who led our Semele in 2022 returns to conduct.
Elmer Gantry
by Robert Aldridge and Hershel Garden
May 1 & 3, 2026
Based on the 1927 satirical novel by Sinclair Lewis, Elmer Gantry follows the exploits of a womanizing salesman turned evangelist in rural America of the early 1900s. Burt Lancaster’s portrayal of Elmer in the eponymous 1960 movie earned him his first Oscar. Elmer Gantry may well be the most entertaining opera of the 21st century so far.
