The General Director reports to the Board of Directors of Opera Santa Barbara. Working most closely with the Board Chair and the Executive Committee of the Board, the General Director has overall responsibility for the successful operation of Opera Santa Barbara and will supervise all paid staff. The responsibilities of the General Director range from leadership and management of daily operations to providing institutional vision guided by the mission and values of Opera Santa Barbara to all aspects of external relations, including fundraising, board relations, community relations, marketing, and acting as the chief spokesperson for the organization.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Strategic Direction and Implementation
Assures that the organization has a Board-approved long-range strategy in accordance with its mission and assures that the organization makes consistent and timely progress towards achieving those strategic objectives via annually updated operating plans.
Together with the Development Committee and the Board of Directors, provides leadership and oversight in fundraising, development, and stewardship, planning and implementation, including identifying resource requirements, researching funding sources, establishing strategies to approach prospective funders, submitting grant proposals, and administering fundraising records and documentation.
Community & National Relations
Represents the organization and its mission, programs, products and services to agencies, organizations, the media and the general public, establishing sound working relationships and cooperative arrangements with other cultural and community entities, groups and individuals as well as on the national level.
Marketing and Public Relations
Working with the Marketing Committee and the Public Relations Consultant, promotes the opera regionally and nationally through well conceived marketing and public relations strategies to advertise and promote opera productions and public offerings; expands public awareness of OSB at a community level; assists in the development of programs to increase attendance through promotion of subscriptions and greater sales of single tickets.
Working with the Artistic Director and the Artistic Planning Committee, provides leadership in developing and implementing program content and design to ensure that all public offerings are of high quality, timely in implementation and within budget in accordance with the strategy and mission, and have contemporary interest to targeted audiences.
Financial, Risk and Facilities Management
Working with the Bookkeeper and Treasurer of the Board and Finance Committee to promotes financial stability; develops the annual budget for board approval; ensures that sound financial practices are in place, and prudently manages the organization’s cash flow resources within established guidelines and in compliance with federal, state and local regulations.
Hire and supervise staff. Help create and lead a dynamic, empowered, high-functioning workplace. Ensure that clear direction and guidance is provided to staff such that the strategic goals of the organization are achieved. Serve as liaison between Board and staff ensuring appropriate mechanisms through which staff is informed of, and in turn implements Board policies and decisions. Working with the Human Resources Committee, ensure that effective personnel policies and procedures are current and updated. Provides annual reviews to each reporting staff person in coordination with the Human Relations Committee.
Board Administration and Support
Supports operations and administration of the Board of Directors by advising and informing Board Members on the condition of all important factors influencing the organization, interfacing between Board and staff. The General Director will also assist in identifying prospective Board Members.
