Statements on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusivity
Opera Santa Barbara pledges to foster diversity, equity, and inclusivity into all aspects of its organization. We seek to represent the community we serve and look beyond the Santa Barbara area to embody the best qualities an organization such as ours can have.
It is the duty of Opera Santa Barbara to create an equitable culture for its staff and board, accomplished through the implementation of equitable policies and training to successfully integrate them. As an organization, we cultivate an environment free of discrimination and prejudice, where fairness reigns for all regardless of race, age, ethnicity, national origin, religious belief, socioeconomic status, gender, sexual orientation, or disability status.
The history of opera is full of characters and stories from all over the world, and no production would be complete without inviting the varied backgrounds and life experiences of our artists. Beyond those on and under the stage, our board and staff constantly strive to bring in fresh perspectives to enliven discussion and enrich our relationship with our audiences. Diversity is the nature of our art, and thus is the nature of our organization.
Opera Santa Barbara seeks to break down the air of exclusion that opera has historically carried. Opera after all is theater accompanied with live music, and the variety and breadth of the medium doesn’t need to carry the social exclusivity associated with the artform’s history. Through educational initiatives seeking to close socioeconomic gaps and public programming that expands the venues of operatic performance, Opera Santa Barbara gives equal access to patrons, artists, and board members alike.
