Curtain Up On Opera Santa Barbara’s Season of Love, Marriage and Particia Racette

2010/2011 Season to offer “An Evening with Patricia Racette”, Verdi’s “La traviata” and “La serva padrona”/ “Trouble in Tahiti”

Patricia Racette(Santa Barbara, CA, June 28, 2010) Opera Santa Barbara (OSB) is pleased to announce an outstanding 16th Season, beginning with An Evening with Patricia Racette November 21 at 5:00 p.m. at The Granada. Ms. Racette is widely recognized as one of opera’s most exciting and spirited sopranos and has enjoyed critical acclaim for performances in several recent Metropolitan Opera productions that were featured as live HD broadcasts. One of “grand opera’s” timeless favorites, Verdi’s La Traviata will be performed March 4 at 7:30 p.m., and March 6 at 2:30 The Granada. The final offering of the season is a pair of one?act operas, Pergolesi’s La Serva Padrona and Leonard Bernstein’s Trouble in Tahiti at the Lobero Theatre, April 8 at 7:30 p.m. and April 10 at 2:30 p.m. With the inclusion of these productions OSB’s new Artistic Director, José Maria Condemi has created a season designed to attract both the traditional opera?goer as well as those seeking a more contemporary experience: “I have designed an eclectic program that appeals to both opera aficionados as well as to those new to the art form. Following the artistic and critical success of Séance on a Wet Afternoon, it is my goal to continue expanding our repertoire selection while offering innovative productions of mainstream operas.”

About the productions:

Coming directly from a triumphant starring role in the Metropolitan Opera production of Il Travatore, Patricia Racette will open OSB’s season when she takes command of The Granada stage for a thrilling evening of opera arias and personally?selected repertoire in An Evening with Patricia Racette (November 21). Among her notable performances at the Met are Cio?Cio?San in Anthony Minghella’s acclaimed staging of Madama Butterfly and Elisabetta in Don Carlo. Ms. Racette is very active on the concert stage and has appeared with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony, and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. The conductor for An Evening with Patricia Racette will be Maestro Valéry Ryvkin. Audiences will be in for an added treat when former Adler Fellow and rising young mezzo?soprano Daniela Mack joins Ms. Racette for a selection of duets and arias from the mezzo repertoire.

In March, Opera Santa Barbara will present its “grand” opera of the season in Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata, (March 4 and 6). One of the most popular operas of all time, La Traviata is the story the young and noble Parisian, Alfredo, who falls in love with the strikingly beautiful but fragile courtesan, Violetta. When Alfredo’s father comes between them, the romance takes a turn for the worse. Opera Santa Barbara will produce La Traviata in cooperation with Opera San Jose, in a dynamic new production directed by OSB Artistic Director Jose Maria Condemi and conducted by Maestro Valéry Ryvkin. Featured artists include Rebecca Davis (Violetta), Ryan McPherson (Alfredo), and Malcolm MacKenzie, who returns to the OSB stage to sing the role of Giorgio Germont. Audiences will be delighted by new sets and costumes created expressly for this production in association with Opera San Jose.

The season finale will feature two one?act operas, La Serva Padrona and Trouble in Tahiti. Composed over 200 years apart, both operas reflect on a common theme of desire and longing for a fulfilling marriage: Giovanni Battista Pergolesi’s La Serva Padrona, written in 1733, is a comic opera whose heroine uses deception and trickery to win her mate; Leonard Bernstein’s debut opera, the bittersweet Trouble in Tahiti, charts a day in the death of the relationship of a husband and wife in the bland, acquisitive environment of American suburbia. Trouble in Tahiti, is lively, jazzy, and uniquely American. Members of San Francisco Opera’s prestigious Adler Program are featured in both operas. Mark Morash, San Francisco Opera Center’s Director of Musical Studies will conduct the
orchestra for this production.
