Opera on the Go

NEXT PROGRAM: THE TWO FIGAROS
With Simon Williams

Wednesday, February 8, 5:30pm

Santa Barbara Historical Museum
136 East De La Guerra Street

Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro is usually thought of as a non-political work. Unlike the celebrated play by Beaumarchais (pictured at left) upon which it is based, Le mariage de Figaro, Mozart’s opera is has often been represented as having little revolutionary purpose. In this talk, Simon Williams will disagree with this judgment. In discussing the play and the opera he will show that both were deeply subversive of the established order, but in different and unexpected ways. Both works reflect the turbulent revolutionary times in which they were written and both are surprisingly modern in their outlook. Please join speaker Simon Williams for an insightful and thrilling insight into the turmoil of a time that gave birth to own turbulent world.

Admission: $15/person; $12/Season Subscribers; $5/Students with ID. (Tickets for sale at the door only.)
